Want to sing?: Belfast Mahler Chorus - Mahler’s Symphony No 2 in C Minor “Resurrection”

“..In love’s fierce striving,

I will soar upwards

To the light which no eye has penetrated..”

Gustav Mahler

The Work

As the 19th Century drew to a close, Bohemian composer Gustav Mahler wrote a symphonic masterpiece that came to be known as the “Resurrection Symphony”. This breath-taking work in five movements asks questions about life, futility, death, love and ultimate renewal.  It features extensive orchestral forces and, for the finale, a large chorus.

The Opportunity

The European Doctors Orchestra conducted by Tim Redmond will be performing Mahler’s Symphony No 2 in C Minor “Resurrection” in the Ulster Hall Belfast on Sunday 26th November 2017. The  EDO itself is made up entirely of instrumental players so we are looking for experienced singers to form an “Irish Doctors Choir” especially for this event.  The chorus master will be Brian MacKay.

Who can apply? What will it cost?

The Irish Doctors’ Choir will enable doctors who love classical music and who sing to a high standard to perform together in aid of this charitable event. We will also warmly welcome applications from European colleagues, from other health care professionals and from medical students.

Proceeds will be donated to charity so, in order to cover chorus costs, there is a singers’ participation fee of £50. The Belfast EDO committee will be offering a limited number of free places to medical students.

Please apply early to avoid disappointment. If a voice part is oversubscribed we will contact you about how we plan to select the Belfast Mahler chorus.

What will be involved and when?

The wonderful choral climax to Resurrection Symphony is challenging to sing and it is not suitable for a “scratch” performance. Chorus members will need to have both the motivation and the ability to learn and perform music to a high standard. In addition to our introductory workshop and rehearsals (see below), Brian MacKay will be supplying details of the vocal score and some online learning options so that singers can do self-learning or work locally in groups.

We will be coming together on the following dates:

  • ‘Singing Mahler’ An Introductory Workshop Saturday on Saturday 18th February 2017 in  The Harty Room, Queen’s University Belfast
  • Pre-Concert Rehearsals of  Mahler 2 ( choral) on Saturday and/or Sunday 11 & 12th November 2017.  One or two venue(s) will be chosen for these after February 2017 depending on chorus-members’ preferences.
  • Concert Weekend rehearsals ( mandatory) on Friday evening 24th , Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th November 2017 with the EDO at Malone Road Belfast and Ulster Hall Belfast
  • Performance in the Ulster Hall Belfast on Sunday 26th November at 7.30pm

What if I can’t plan my work schedule for November 2017?

We appreciate than many colleagues, trainees in particular, may not have the option of reserving time off very far in advance. We will do everything we can to accommodate this, but we need to secure a chorus who can commit to the performance as soon as we can.

If you are interested but you are definitely unable to sing on 26th November 2017, you can still use our application form to express interest in membership of the Irish Doctors’ Choir as we expect to hold more choral events in the future.

What about travel, accessibility and accommodation?

All our venues will be accessible by car or public transport. We are sourcing group deals in a range of Belfast hotels that are convenient to the Ulster Hall and the social activities that will accompany this event. If you identify any special needs on your application form we will do our best to cater for these.
